For a band that’s always sounded (and looked) as if they’re visiting from the not-too-distant future, there’s something about Yip-Yip’s music that conjures a pair of Luddites shielding themselves behind a scattering of synthesizers. Brian Esser and Jason Temple, the two Floridians who’ve been recording as Yip-Yip for much of the past decade, excel at creating the type of pixilated noise that many of us would assimilate with level three of the original Mario Brothers game. They count no less than a dozen synths, Moogs, Korgs and Casios as weapons of choice and on this, their fourth LP, but have added cymbals and a real saxophone, attributes that suggest that there is actual flesh and blood involved, while sacrificing none of their analog magnetism.
